Every year, WardsAuto evaluates automotive powertrains to find the best engines. The 1.8-liter turbocharged DOHC four-cylinder engine of the Volkswagen Golf was ranked as a best four-cylinder engine.
To give drivers in the Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Newport Beach area an idea of what this engine can do, we had our team at Norm Reeves Volkswagen Superstore in Irvine take a closer look at this performance powerhouse.
About the Volkswagen Golf TSI Engine
Many people think that German engineering is expensive, best suited for high-priced luxury sedans. This isn’t the case with Volkswagen, which provides state-of-the-art performance technology at low consumer costs.
Take the 1.8-liter TSI four-cylinder engine of the Volkswagen Golf, for example. A 2014 and 2015 winner of the Best Engine Award, this direct-injected engine is a third-generation EA888, which shares characteristics of the 2.0-liter variations found in the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The 1.8-liter TSI comes as a replacement for the former 2.5-liter I-5, offering a shorter stroke, lighter weight, and 1 less cylinder, all while having the same-size bore. Plus, with direct injection, the 1.8 TSI can produce 200 lb-ft of torque and 170 horsepower.
But the Volkswagen Golf isn’t the only model you can find this engine in. The Volkswagen Beetle, Jetta, and Passat all offer the 1.8-liter turbocharged option.
