Volkswagen Touareg vs Acura MDX

If you’re looking for a versatile SUV, then chances are you’ve considered the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg and the Acura MDX. But which vehicle is better suited for drivers in the Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Newport Beach area? Our team at Norm Reeves Volkswagen Superstore in Irvine compares these two models to find out what sets them apart.

Volkswagen Touareg and Acura MDX: Interior Style

Step into either the Volkswagen Touareg or the Acura MDX and you’ll find the level of comfort and style reserved for luxury SUVs. You’ll also find an ample amount of cargo room for you and your passengers.

However, the Volkswagen Touareg offers slightly more legroom and headroom in certain rows. Specifically, you’ll find 36.7 inches of second room legroom in the Volkswagen Touareg and 36.5 inches in the Acura MDX.

More impressively, the Volkswagen Touareg offers 39.6 inches of front headroom compared to just 38.1 inches in the MDX. Moving into the second row, your adult passengers will be pleased to find out that the Volkswagen Touareg has 38.9 inches of headroom. Meanwhile, the Acura MDX caps out at 38.3 inches.

The Volkswagen Touareg is also thinner and shorter than the MDX, at 118.8 inches long by 76.4 inches wide compares to 193.6 inches by 77.2 inches.

Engine Performance

Both the Volkswagen Touareg and the Acura MDX come standard with a V6 engine, but the Volkswagen engine is a hair larger at 3.6 liters compared to 3.5 in the Acura. With such similar engines, it’s no surprise to find out that these two SUVs offer comparable horsepower and torque capabilities. They even both come with automatic transmission systems.

One thing you’ll notice, however, is the size of the fuel tank. The Volkswagen Touareg features a 26.4-gallon tank, while the MDX has only a 19.5-gallon tank. On top of that, the recommended fuel for the Volkswagen SUV is regular unleaded, while the Acura MDX recommends premium unleaded fuel.

One big difference between the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg and the Acura MDX is their standard drivetrain. Every Volkswagen Touareg comes equipped with 4MOTION® permanent all-wheel drive. This system distributes power from the engine out to all four wheels. It also provides high-level traction on a multitude of surfaces and improves control.

The 2016 Acura MDX, on the other hand, comes standard with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available for the Acura, but it comes only as an added upgraded, whereas 4MOTION® AWD comes standard.
