Active Safety and Accident Prevention

The active safety features in your Volkswagen are responsible for preventing or correcting dangerous driving situations to keep your vehicle from being involved in a collision. This includes features such as driver assistance and brake assist technology.

Specifically speaking, there are seven standard active safety features and 12 optional advanced active safety features available. In the standard collection, the Anti-Lock Brake System allows drivers to control steering even while braking, while the Hydraulic Brake Assistant shortens braking distance and Electronic Brake-Pressure Distribution maximizes braking power.

Anti-Slip Regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, and Engine Braking Assist help improve traction on a variety of road conditions, while Electronic Stability Control reduces skidding and lowers the potential of rollover.

The advanced features vary wildly in their uses. Lane Assist, for instance, monitors road markings to distinguish driving lanes and helps the driver stay in the correct lane. Meanwhile, Adaptive Cruise Control uses radar to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. Additional features include systems such as a backup camera, High Beam Assist, and Dynamic Adaptive Headlights to help improve your overall visibility as you’re navigating the road day or night.

Passenger Protection and Passive Safety

Passive safety is different from active in that these features have been built into the design of your Volkswagen. For example, the airbag is a passive safety feature, but so is the deformation-resistant occupant cell. The primary function of these features is protecting the occupants of the vehicle during a collision.

These include driver- and passenger-side front airbags made standard as well as side-impact head and thorax airbags. Safety belt pre-tensioners for all seats help keep passengers in the ideal seating position to reduce the risk of injury, while a high-strength safety design of the actual vehicle itself works to absorb and redirect crash energy away from the occupants.

Our Safest Models Yet

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has been testing and rating vehicles for years in an effort to make the roads a safer place. Through a serious of crash tests, the IIHS determines how well a vehicle protects its passengers in addition to its ability to prevent crashes.

Each year, the IIHS releases a list of top safety picks, representing vehicles that received good ratings in each category of crashworthiness. We’re proud to announce that the 2015 Volkswagen Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Passat were all named as IIHS 2015 Top Safety Picks.
