VW Jetta vs Honda Civic MPG

2019 Volkswagen JettaSince both the Jetta and Civic have a reputation for fuel efficiency, we wanted to see how their standard powertrains compared here.

Both sedans come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, which is ideal for drivers who want complete control over their shift schedules. However, if you want to maximize on efficiency, we recommend choosing the automatic transmission options in both cars.

When we look at the standard engine and automatic transmission, we see the following maximum EPA-estimated fuel economy estimates:

  • Volkswagen Jetta MPG: 30 MPG city, 40 MPG highway1
  • Honda Civic MPG: 30 MPG city, 38 MPG highway

As you can see, both the Jetta and Civic can get up to 30 MPG in the city, but if you commute along a big stretch of highway, you may be able to go farther between fill-ups in the VW Jetta.1

Smart Safety Features in the VW Jetta and Civic

Both the VW Jetta and Honda Civic make safety a priority by including collision mitigation technologies, like an available Forward Collision Assist system. This system uses sensors to monitor the road ahead for unseen hazards. If detected, it’ll issue an alert to slow down or even hit the brakes for you.

Other available smart safety features in both cars include Blind Spot Monitors and Lane Keeping Assist systems.

What about after a collision, though? While we expect that local drivers do their best to stay safe, sometimes the unexpected happens. If it does, the Volkswagen Jetta has a feature called Automatic Post-Collision Braking. This kicks in to slow or stop your vehicle to try and prevent any secondary impacts.

The Honda Civic doesn’t offer a similar feature, so VW Jetta drivers may be more protected from additional roll-through impacts after a collision.

Volkswagen Jetta vs Honda Civic Infotainment Systems

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment SystemsWhen you’re behind the wheel of your sedan, it’s nice to have features that keep you connected and informed no matter where you are.

Both the Civic and VW Jetta make Bluetooth® connectivity standard. This allows you to wirelessly connect your smartphone and make hands-free phone calls or stream music. They’re also both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatible and feature a full-color touchscreen display in the center stack.

While both the VW Jetta and Civic have an available integrated navigation system, only the VW Jetta features a full-screen navigation view in the VW Digital Cockpit. This is a 10-inch display in the driver’s dashboard that places turn-by-turn navigation directly below your line of sight.

With this Volkswagen-exclusive feature, you don’t have to move your eyes as far from the road ahead to find out when to make your next turn.
