Changing Your Tire
As a driver, it’s important to know how to change a tire because it will enable you to continue your journey rather than sit along the side of the road. When a tire is flat, you’ll want to make sure that you replace it properly. When you have to change a tire, follow these crucial steps:
- Pull over to a safe location and turn on your car’s hazard lights
- Make sure your parking brake is engaged
- Locate your tire-changing tools (lug wrench, hydraulic trolley jack, wheel wedges, and your spare tire)
Once you’ve gathered your tools, it’s time to change out the tire and replace it with your spare. If the tire to be changed is located on the driver’s side, make sure that you’re parked well off the road. You’ll then want to place the wheel wedges in the proper place before using the hydraulic trolley jack to lift the vehicle.
Consult your owner’s manual before using the jack; you’ll want to know the proper placement of the jack for your specific vehicle so the car’s weight is evenly distributed and you’re able to lift it safely. Before using the jack, it’s a good idea to loosen the lug nuts so the vehicle doesn’t wobble while situated on the jack.
Place the jack as instructed and insert the handle, then rotate it clockwise until the vehicle is high enough off the ground. You can then further loosen the lug nuts and remove the flat tire. Put on the spare tire and tighten the nuts by hand. You can then partially lower the vehicle, but make sure the full weight of the car isn’t on the tire just yet. Tighten the lug nuts with the wrench until they’re on firmly. You can then lower the vehicle the rest of the way and remove the jack.
Staying Ahead of a Flat Tire
It’s always wise to know the condition of your tires before embarking on any major trip. Look for signs of wear or cracks. You’ll want to check your tires’ tread, too. Of course, in order to truly know the condition of your tires, you’ll want to have your vehicle inspected regularly by certified technicians. They’ll be able to determine if any of your tires need to be repaired or replaced so you can have peace of mind when on the road.
