Gas-Sipping 2015 Passat and SportWagen

Imagine yourself cruising down the highway with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine and 170 horsepower just waiting underneath your foot. That’s the 2015 Volkswagen Passat. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, this sedan offers up to 35 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg in the city.1

Increasing fuel efficiency is the 2015 Golf SportWagen. Though it uses a similar 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with a five-speed manual transmission, this Volkswagen manages to raise fuel economy to 25 city and 36 highway mpg.2 That’s no small feat for a vehicle of roughly the same size as the Passat.

VW Golf and Jetta Hybrid

Looking at the 2015 Volkswagen Golf, we’re introduced again to the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with 170 horsepower along with a familiar five-speed manual transmission. But thanks to the Golf’s smaller size and aerodynamic shape, this hatchback can achieve 25 city and 37 highway mpg.3

While that’s a remarkable stat for solely gasoline-powered engines, the Jetta Hybrid reminds us of the power that dual-powered vehicles can offer. Upgrading to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, the 2015 Jetta Hybrid offers 170 horsepower while using only a fraction of the fuel. Clocking in at 42 city and 48 highway mpg,4 the Jetta Hybrid outdrives the Golf by almost 10 miles.

e-Golf: What’s Gas?

Though this may not be the fair fight, the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf electric car definitely saves on gas. Featuring zero-tailpipe emissions and 199 lb-ft of torque, this efficient car gets a mind-blowing 126 city and 105 highway mpg5 when paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. Plus the electric motor still provides 115 horsepower and can be set to one of three performance-enhancing driving modes.

TDI Clean Diesel Engine

As if Volkswagen didn’t give you enough fuel-saving options already, they went and equipped seven of their vehicles with an optional TDI Clean Diesel engine. With new technology that reduces the noise and odor that stigmatized diesel for years, these engines substantially improve fuel efficiency.

Take the Passat, for example. When equipped with a 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine and a six-speed manual transmission, this car bumps fuel efficiency up to 44 highway mpg.6 That’s roughly 814 highway miles on just one tank of gas.7

How about the Jetta? Using the TDI Clean Diesel engine and a six-speed manual transmission, the Jetta TDI Clean Diesel manages to squeeze out 46 highway miles per every gallon of gas.8 That’s only two miles less than the Jetta Hybrid without ever having to charge a motor.
